POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER (PTSD)


PTSD is a type of mood disorder. It can happen at any age. When most people think of PTSD, they think of homecoming veterans.
However, PTSD can happen from many things such as: natural disaster, trauma, crime, and war.
It may take years for this to come into effect. There are no tests for this disorder, only symptoms.

Symptoms include
  • reliving the event
    • nightmares
    • memories
    • flashbacks
    • reacting to situations reminding you of the event
  • Avoidance
    • can't remember pieces
    • avoid places that remind you of what happened
    • not interested in daily activities
    • feeling of no future
  • Problems
    • trouble concentrating
    • startled easily
    • over the top reactions
    • senses more keen
    • anger quickly
    • can't sleep
  • Feelings
    • guilty
    • dizzy/fainting
    • head aches
    • feeling your pulse in chest
  • Symptoms of Children
    • revert to old habits
    • can't talk
    • headaches/stomachaches
    • refusal to go places
    • refuse to be with friends
Treatments
  • Support system“desensitization” – talk about feelings about it
    • Group of friends
  • approx. 6-8 weeks for treatment
  • anti depressants can help
Possible Causes- professionals are not certain what causes PTSD
  • Stathmin – protein in brain that may cause disorder
  • GRP – gastrin-releasing peptide chemical that controls response to fear
  • Lack may cause PTSD

  • women, alcoholics, uneducated people, and younger people get it more often
  • 5.2 million adults per year have PTSD
  • 7-8% of people will have it in there lives
